Job Search Tips

Use these Job Searching Tips to help you fine tune your Positions Vacant search results.

First up… realise you are searching within around 80,000+ jobs at any given time across Australia.

Obviously that could produce a lot of results that will not be useful to you.

Can I suggest you start with the LOCATION field!

  • Enter your town / city / suburb name and or Postcode
  • Optionally, choose the STATE your town is in (useful if there are more than two towns with the same name)
  • Then hit the SEARCH button.

This will display ALL the jobs available in your area.

Next… depending on how many vacancies are shown… you may need to either

  • WIDEN your search (i.e. not enough jobs going in that area), OR
  • NARROW your search (reduce the number of results available)
To WIDEN your Search

If you are not getting enough results… then tweak these settings to show more:

  • The default DISTANCE for any city/postcode searches is 50km. In many regional/country areas, you may need to increase that distance to 100km or more to see extra jobs.
  • The default AGE displayed for all searches is “jobs advertised in the last 7 days”. To see extra jobs, change that setting to 14 or 30 days.
  • To NARROW your Search

If you are getting too many results… then these changes can reduce them:

  • The default DISTANCE for any city/postcode searches is 50km. In bigger city areas, you may need to REDUCE that distance to 25km or 5km to see fewer job vacancies displayed.
  • The default AGE displayed for all searches is “jobs advertised in the last 7 days”. To see fewer jobs, change that setting to 1 day (last 24 hours).
  • Use a KEYWORD – job title, position, company name etc – to find only those records which contain the keyword/s entered.
  • Select a MAJOR CATEGORY to search within, to see ONLY the vacancies available in that category… Please note that there are many sub-categories also available which are NOT shown on the pop-up selection. To view those directly, please go to the main Job Vacancies page, and drill down from there.
  •

You can mix and match any combination of keyword, location, state, age, distance and category.

And each time you search, your selections are saved on the search form displayed on the bottom of the results page… which makes it easy for you to fiddle to get only the results you really want.

Please note: this only saves the MAJOR category (if chosen) and not any subcategories, as there are too many to be manageable.

    HOT TIP

Shortcut to get to jobs in your area….

On any of the results pages… if a CITY NAME is clickable then click that!

You will be taken to jobs near that city!

Remember, you can NARROW DOWN the number of search results returned by using the search form and

    1. providing a KEYWORD (or words), and/or
    2. limiting your search to a STATE and/or a CITY, and/or
    3. reducing either the DISTANCE or the DAYS options
